The
Arigna LEADER board comprises of 31 members made up
of community representatives, social partners, state
agencies and elected public representatives. The community
members represent 8 Geographical areas in the Catchment
area whom upon resignation are replaced by another
representative from that area. The state agencies
and social partner representatives are nominated from
within their respective organisations

The
Department of Community, Rural & Gaelthacht
Affairs are the National Authority responsible for
the programme in Ireland. The approach of the programmes
is to be highly innovative and two groups, women
and young people have being identified for priority
attention as they are considered by the European
Commission key to development of rural areas.

Arigna
Catchment Area Community Company or Arigna LEADER
Company, as it is has become known, was set up in
1991 in order to initiate a community-led response
to the problems of rural decline and depopulation
in its catchment area following the devastation caused
by the closure of the Arigna coal mines. Arigna LEADER’s
catchment area comprises of all of County Leitrim
together with the North Roscommon electoral areas
of Ballaghaderreen, Boyle, Castlerea and Strokestown.
The area, which is predominantly rural, has a population
of circa 62,000 people.
